The Wiki[edit]

Developed as a dynamic, multi-dimensional conceptual network, the basic architecture consists of nodes, containing expositions and definitions of concepts, connected by links, representing the associations that exist between the concepts. Both nodes and links can belong to different types — expressing different semantic and practical categories — organized according to a unified format. This network has a quasi-hierarchical structure, with parent nodes and child nodes.[1]

The state thus far:

  • WIP
  • allowance for open source research and data dumps
  • support for the process of collaborative theory-building
  • knowledge, expressed as a network of nodes and links, structured in a better way by bootstrapping the distinctions between nodes, leading to the merging, differentiation or integration of ambiguously distinguished concepts such as
  • mental model logging
  • hypermedia structuring knowledge in a network of concepts[2]
  • semantic network
  • jumping off point for launching our own journal

The M.A.D.R.U. Directory[edit]

In the hopes of creating a open source science model to rival legacy institutions, the Decentralised Research Unit will act like a think tank.

  • See twitter.com/memeticcult & twitter.com/abstractioncult to get a brief intro to both fields.

The M.A.D.R.U. Manifesto[edit]

The Memetics & Abstraction Decentralised Research Unit focuses on the clarification of fundamental concepts and principles in the broadly defined domain of memetics and abstraction. This includes related disciplines.

Both Memetics & Abstraction are theories on their own, but until now they have never been brought together—mainly due to abstraction itself being relatively new, and memetics being an abandoned field. Both fields are underdeveloped and metamodern; they can fit succinctly with another to create a new coherent body of knowledge—to explain phenomena in human affairs.

We intend to move towards conceptual unification of the relatively fragmented fields of Memetics & Abstraction through decentralised consensus. The objective is to reflexively apply Memetic & Abstraction methodologies to the development of the foundations of Memetics & Abstraction themselves.

Reasons[edit]

Our reason for engaging and starting in this line of work is due to the renewed interest in memetics and abstraction, particularly in the realm of the internet, and the use of memes as an area of study in politics and sociology. A unedited source of reasons and motivations for further study:

  • Useful to affect ones community - Dan
  • Trying to understand unseen forces/assumptions (Daemons?) that people operate on. Being able to recognize and name a thing gives one power over it. - J.W.
  • Memes are the conduit which carries life. A better understanding is needed in the age of instant information. - WashPahpin
  • Memes are an evolution of language. By being able to convey our understanding of the world in more precise terms we can connect on higher (more resonant) levels. "Your cause won’t make any difference in history unless it creates an alternative medium of information exchange." @yungdeleuze -SpiralMagician
  • My reason for studying memes: Memes in the abstract are information; intelligence is the capacity to effectively interpret information; the nature of intelligence is autoproductive; so learning to interpret memes opens the door for optimizing one's interpretative schema itself - OB
  • My reason: memes succinctly describe the inter/intragenerational transmission of cognitive heuristics and entire schemas, thereby allowing the viewer to interfere within culture- Defense mech
  • My reason for studying memes is because it's a fundamental part of understanding ourselves and all that implicates. We are not individuals so much as we are one part of many layers of one great super organism - Erin
  • Thinking of the trade off hypothesis and how much human evolutionary mechanism might have been influenced by abstraction influenced and enabled by memetics (language and abstract symbolism) for planning and strategy in the savannah. - arCHiCtect
  • Awareness about memes can provide better health for us, the hosts, and stronger and better memes in the ecosystem. We increase the evolutionary pressure. - loopuleasa

Agenda:[edit]

In abstracting out of certain levels of discord, with an objective to stay objective, we aim to take a non-partisan, meta approach to the ontology of epistemology we are creating.

The goal of memetics and abstraction is two fold: open source knowledge capture in the form of a decentralised research unit (compiled into a wiki on the subject) to generate axiomatic foundations from which further extrapolations can be developed. Our goal is to provide ideas in the form of both solutions and analyses.

This philosophical system will not be developed as a traditional document, but rather as a conceptual network. A unit, or node, in the network can be a book, a chapter, a paragraph, a definition, an essay, a picture, a reference, etc. By linking nodes together using several types of semantic relations, multiple hierarchical orderings of the network will be maintained, giving both readers and authors flexible access to every part of the system. The network will be implemented in a hybrid computer-based environment involving hypermedia, electronic mail, and electronic publishing. Such a system is intended to allow the dynamic development of a multidimensional system fully reflecting and incorporating the semantic relations inherent among the terms being explicated, and to unify and synthesize notations and terminology used in different traditions and disciplines (Joslyn, 1991).[3]

Why the need for knowledge capture?[edit]

Fast moving, and rhizomal structures, due to less centralisation, have a problem of forming history, and maintaining the best practices; in optimizing for speed and experimentation, there is a trade-off in structure. This can be circumnavigated via hypertext mediums, such as this wiki, which is a living document that offers rapid on-boarding, quick familiarisation of goals and processes, and a repository of past notes. This can be extended the notion of projects themselves, as decentralised governance calls for a fluid and agile orginisational structure that allows for quick movement; this movement needs to be logged, from which there can be a learning mechanism developed. The benefit of automisation and artificial intelligence is that there is constant and iterative learning, whereas each generation of humans need to rediscover truth and processes via learning mechanisms, spread quickly via the printing press, and to a greater degree, the internet. Knowledge capture is important to improve learning models, and to create meta models of how the models have updated over time. This acceleration of data capture allows us to track and measure progress—to know where we are coming from, and where we would like to go.

Structure[edit]

The decentralised research unit aspect will operate as closely as possible to a non hierarchical format. It is decentralised and efforts are voluntary and open. This works perfectly in the modern age due to technology allowing for mass collaboration across teams and countries.

Open source research in the form of theory is a new and novel structure. It will be a virtual organisation and network, but there needs to be some form of centralisation in the form of knowledge capture and documentation: this page is one form of that, as is the wiki itself; this is useful for project management, so people have a reference when they are entering collaboration.

This can evolve into policy research, but we hope it will remain true to its guiding foundation principles of research first. Being open and decentralised will help in keeping this as non partisan as possible—post-political if you will. The open source nature of this requires dedication and time, more than anything else. We will use memetics and abstraction in a way that we are removed from being controlled by our memes so that we can objectively measure them from the outside.

The development of our open source model is ongoing, and there is a current problem of contributors differing wildly between being active and merely lurking. We are going to look to open source software development teams to see how best manage open source and decentralised teams. Currently, movement of the MADRU mimics agile software development.

post-politics[edit]

In the madru onboarding page, we outline how held views affect further views created, but in learning memetics, we have slowly come to believe that our understanding will grant more autonomy of interaction between self and belief, as it abstracts all belief into memetic heuristics—essentially, you can be abstracted out of your own beliefs over time. We've seen this happen to more people as they grow more familiar with memetics. To add to this: the notion of politics begets the notion of post-politics; one must understand systems governance through the lens of system dynamics and feedback loops—relationships between man and his exterior—via system design.

We recognise that there is a sense of current systems failing: their entire systems of logic have inherent design flaws.

Project Logic of Rhizome Seeding[edit]

What does it mean to seed a rhizome?

Rhizomes are a fast horizontal growing organism. With the rhizome metaphor, we hope to mimic their nature of fast growth, and decentralised networking. This increases the organisation's agility; network organisations as organisms, rather than machines, reflects the fluid nature of biomechanics—alot more analog, amourphous and reflexive: gradients and degrees to the ontology of epistemology we are creating—a system or body of knowledge which mirrors the brain itself. an important distinction we have learnt is the notion that decentralisation is not strictly horizontal; there should still exist a system of hierarchy in terms of projects. The projects are temporary to combat against rent seekers hungry for status and power (rhizomes = decentralised =/= horizontal). Rhizomes sprout and have a vertical aspect to them, and in "projectspace" there needs to be someone who owns up to the mistakes. The wiki doubles up as a place to open source field notes and research notes: our understanding of decentralised rhizome governance is growing and we would like to think we are gaining new insights: rhizome seeding is the horizontal off-shoot of existing projects—agility, organised by aesthetic orientation: more cacophonous.

Rhizomes are temporary, meaning that they will establish a small agile group with their own norms, catalogue data, and then break down rhizome. Why ? In order to combat rent seeking and to incentivise meritocracy, and to reduce the effects of the combined factors of both top down and heirarchal stucturing (it is similar in what ARPA does so they can keep innovating). Institutions are limited by time, and that time can be the end of the project

Rhizomes have an internal micro hierarchy, but that is not to say they do not seek outside help; in forming any project, there needs to be an understanding of how much outside help operators need and what resources they need to operate—how much auxiliary support a particular rhizome needs.

society : organsations :: swarm : organisms[edit]

For a while, with the invention of techne, there was a period in the history of man that understood corporations as products of human organisation. In corporations inspired by the notion of the techne itself, we discover a way of thinking and processing that lead to the mimicry of the machine, with its own "gears" and "cogs". Humans were, for a while, mechanised. This was a natural evolution stemming from mechanistic underpinnings of the division of labour in early neolithic societies that relied on agriculture; society slowly extended the division of labour, developing new technology capable of affecting the organisation of man. The organisation of man was affected by the technologies created, generating a loop of action and reaction which lead to man slowly mimicing the technologies; the memes too also represent changes enabled by this mimicry. Technology of the time is a fluid mechanics metaphor. Memes of the time mirror technological and social metaphors, in a dynamic fluid armouphous flux, constantly refining the processes and parts of the whole to better utilise and sort out entropy. The refinement process of the specialisation of societies, and organisations, can be likened to the notion of the brain and the brain pathways, minimising entropy—thus competition of the intra nodes drives refinement of the whole. Agile teams are characterised by non-linear progress and people-centered cultures, with rapid learning and decision cycles, all of which are augmented by technology.

Now, on the eve of the advent of artificial intelligence: this new technology may give rise to new insights to be mirrored by it. The use of computation has lead to the deployment of different forms and philosophical meanings of language—this is where the notion of abstraction may come in; there are different levels to abstraction, with different forms of processing. Down to its simplest explanation, computation is the process of information manipulation; the metaphor of computing something as a means to work something out is prevalent throughout history. But information in the human world is much more complex and non-linear—this is where the abstract notion of memetics come in. As those looking into artificial intelligence are looking towards humans and the animal world for divine understanding to further their field, we suppose that we can put their mirror back to its use as a mirror, borrowing from the insights of AI researchers to learn more about us and the animal world, thus, via reflexivity, furthering both fields.

Management[edit]

  • open source
  • decentralised
  • autonomous
  • anonymous
  • rhizomal
  • nomadic

Organisation[edit]

A world-wide organization, with many contributors, managed autonomously.

Research[edit]

Memetics is inherently meta, in the sense that is abstracted out of ideas to create a science of ideas themselves. This bleeds into culture research. As a process of abstraction, abstraction is, at its core, meta-cognition.

We intend to create new theories of knowledge and philosophy, along with ways of organising this, through our two guiding philosophies: memetics and abstraction. The main goal would be the defining research program, which will result eventually in application of theory, in the form of critique and research papers.

We intend to create a knowledge repository in the form of relevant research library on all things memetic and abstracting.

knowledge systems[edit]

This project, in and of itself, is an experiment in decentralised and eventually self-organising knowledge systems, thus resulting in the self-application of the theory. It will refer to its own body of knowledge as memes or memeplexes, and links as abstractions between different memes; ideally, the plan is for it to become so mechanised that the knowledge system becomes its own entity.

The knowledge capture aspect echoes previous attempts at growing a living and evolving hypertext document into a semantic network—a capture of knowledge that requires cross domain building, and increasing links between fields. Akin to a (in progress) hypertext book, it is evolving and growing, and this line of thinking—of evolution and feedback loops—is built into its conception. The hope is that rise of automation and artificial intelligence will be served by this system, and serve this system in turn.

A large variety of concepts or ideas, provided by a variety of sources: different contributors to the project with different scientific and cultural backgrounds help us with staying abstracted away from partisan discourse, and thus, bias.[4]

The easy gathering, exchange, editing and otherwise manipulating of these ideas by a group of contributors can be facilated by different techniques through computer-supported cooperative work.

Outputs =[edit]
  • a progress update
  • current memetic environment reports
  • general field reporting and efforts.

Decentralised Research Unit.[edit]

A subset of DAOs, and which are a niche notion focused primarily on knowledge systems.[5]

Knowledge systems => automated inference engines (via Proof of Weight). The autonomous knowledge system would be driven by a decentralised research unit which itself is a subset of a DAO. Not a repository, but a data set. The data set will be reflexive. Essentially, if we're correct, the AI will be able to think in "strange loops." (Wolfram created his own language.) Most conceptions have too many abstraction paths; they go about it the wrong way. A strange loop means u gotta go away to get close!

Work load[edit]

Work will be low entropy as possible, open sourced and collaborative with hierarchy only where needed.

Of course, there is a lot of trial and error in the forming of a new organisation structure, so we appreciate your patience.

We are interested in outsourcing to virtual assistants to get more impact driven results—automation where possible.

We need advisory boards and inputs.

This is a labour of love, for those who love research and insight. Not getting paid and being open about any donations about resource allocation is needed in our opinion.

As per growth, we want to opt for more localised growth networks; slower growth that optimises better collaboration and relationship bonds of the volunteers over a fast, blitz like growth will allow us to work out kinks at our own pace. Word of mouth and dedicated workers are a much stronger long term signal—a proof of work, if you will. One could argue our structure is very crypto inspired.

As of right now we are not too concerned with the applications of potential research avenues: we ought to be more focused on establishing the data bank.

Perhaps in the long term, we can transition to more conventional work loads.

We should produce detailed reports, short posts, and explanatory videos to promote our own work while also working with sympathetic legislators and media publications to provide data and analysis for other stories and initiatives.

Our organization structure, based on DARPA/ARPA

1. Development chain in ARPA-like organizational structure Idea => Preliminary Stage (limited funding) => Extensive Funding => Proof of Concept => Communication => Application in the world => General Think tank.

2. Drawing from public pool of creators (academia, military, industry), placing them in highly creative/productive environment, stressing one kind of research, using many seemingly disconnected fields (electricians work together with plumbers). "100 geniuses lead by 1 travel salesman".

3. Adapting model of agency to changing needs. Defense/Energy development with clearly available customer (changed recently for closer cooperation with civil industries). Separation from existing administrations, freedom of operation.

4. Bridge between basic (highly theoretical) and applied research (extending already existing tech). Highly theoretical == no available product. Applied research == 'Making Your fridge cooler kind-of-a-research'

How does it apply to 'MADRU'

1. Developing process—from idea creation, to brainstorming, to creation of actual 'product'.

2. Open source, contributor structure. Creating tools and environment for development and pursuit of topics. Working on one theory from many different angles

3. Adapting to evolution of memetics—tracking past evolution, and anticipating future evolution. Using fresh look on whole theory, trying to avoid references (of course, not possible to full extent)

4. Looking for practical application of theory as validation of it.

5. Autonomous & Rhizomal laboratory. see more on rhizomes : http://www.mantlethought.org/philosophy/rhizome-american-translation

Background of research units.

Initial inspiration for the set up of this think tank came from two spaces: the crypto-cyber-anarchist punks, of late 20th century, and the CCRU, the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit. Going back even further, we will use the non linear formation of the Design Research Unit, the DRU, which was an industrial design consultancy firm—using what was novel, the cross disciplinary background of its employees functions as a unique strength.

However where we divorce from predecessors, and it is important to acknowledge our predecessors, is that we are focused on post-political meta commentary, ideas and analysis. Through the analysis of memes themselves (“Memes Nor Genes Care For Truth.”) We should then realise this, and abstract out lest we become victims to the memes themselves—not an easy practice.

We are in a post cyber age—a post internet age—a meta age— where one has unprecedented power, greater than all of human history, to self author. Why is self authoring important? Because it relates directly to the meta-modern age: man can write his own story—manifest his own destiny. This is the power of modern technology. The most meta modern technology we've found is virtual reality. One creates his own reality. In order to measure this abstraction, this meta-reality, if you will, one needs to abstract out and create a language that deals with the fractal complexities of meta abstract levels.

The progression of research units is that they get weirder. Which is a good thing, in that they become more unique—in a sense, outside the realm of normality, and into their own created pocket universe, drawing different expertise into and within a single practice.

Whereas the CCRU focused on cybernetics and culture, we focus on Memetics and Abstraction. Memetics and Abstraction are inexplicably linked and intertwined: two parts of the same language.

We will take certain logics that were converged upon by previous research unit entities, and expand them. For instance in contrast to the lack of real life projects and experiments of previous theory driven entities, particularly the CCRU, we will, through the power of technology and access, conduct practical experiments, and develop theory with measures of information.

There are obviously larger research focused organisations, such as many other think tanks, and the ARPA/DARPA foundations. I would say we are more closely linked to them, more than anything else. We already have in the works industrial projects and experiments.

From member moritzset : on the set up of the unit : http://mitsloan.mit.edu/shared/ods/documents/?DocumentID=4615 Another research unit which is worth noting is that of XEROX Parc.

Lean and agile with a risk taking culture, our high openness means that any suggestions to use the resources of The MADRU are welcome. We aim to foster and nurture an innovative start-up like culture, within the MADRU.

The attractive aspect we find personally about the MADRU is the notion of new ideas about ideas themselves: thinking about thinking.

In order to increase resource availability we need to reach out across niches and across knowledge domains, in order to gain access to new insights.

The fields of Memetics and Abstraction themselves require a large knowledge domain base. This think tank is suited to creative generalists, as well as long term operatives.

We prioritise research.

To increase our held assets, we have created a wiki, which is a open source knowledge base, that builds upon the work of many external fields, and their researchers.

Since this is decentralised, there is a sense of bottom up emergence—rhizomal structures where needed. This relates to program design and research efforts; these are all bottom up. Because of this emergence, we can make really quick progress: the notion of open source collaboration means that each individual has to manage less and input less, but for the same amount of effort pushed, contributes to more projects.

The bottom up aspect is focused on speed and getting it done. We are living in a world that iterates and changes very quickly and the feedback loops are increasing: our program model must reflect this. As we scale, we will be getting contracts and gathering more resources, which will lead to result of outsourcing certain things. For now, it is important to not count unhatched chickens. We need to focus on creating and padding out our knowledge base.

Bottom up structure creation model is perfect for decentralised research units. There will be future projects, with their own project logic, and project lead(s). But within the creation of ideas to meet mission challenges, there needs to be more emergent properties; this can be done by connecting unconnected people, and created new knowledge base synergies—a type of co-creation. The projects are goal orientated, but the overarching mission of the thinktank MADRU is not. A creation of a project leads to a creation of logic, and thus relies on emergent properties of the best practices over time; this has to work in conjunction with the overarching decentralisation; thus each new project creates its own sets of memes, that are internal to that project. This new creation of language and communication is vital to knowledge generation.

Consensus and proof of weight[edit]

There is no peer review: only decentralised consensus. However we may consult externally to the think tank for outside review. This notion of consensus means that ideas and concepts developed within the think tank will be open to critique; however consensus itself is a very similar process of peer review, except the peer review is open sourced and manifested over time via reputation technologies such as social media. It may very well end up looking the same, but for now, it is too early to tell. The main issue we may find is the differences in formal definitions; as we progress and converge in our meme exchanges, it is inevitable that we will become more formalist as we progress—as is the natural evolution of memeplexes and semantic knowledge systems. The consensus aspect in a decentralised research unit needs to be explored, and as this consensus reaching is a experiment in and of itself, we can explore different ways to coordinate and converge through the use of technology and open sources.

Potentially, we can evolve this concept into explicit consensus and implicit consensus; implicit being a minority going ahead and adding the wiki—the knowledge capture—and then relating that capture to a wider audience. We hope for the day that this knowledge capture system can become autonomous; in using semantic webbing, and the use of citations and linkages between different types of consensus, there can be "weights" on the links of proof. This will require more work into research mining, perhaps with mining tech and AI helping to organise formalised definitions (axioms) in our knowledge base.

Anonymous compliant, in order to be a contributor, we ask you know two members, or know the founder. This will limit input creep, yet still allow for anonymity.

This entire venture is a skunk works of theory. We want novel insights, we must do novel things that require those novel insights. We are creating a memetic science and technology, and it needs to be replicable. Hacking theory: while going straight to first principles, we acknowledge the work of others by only using what is useful to the organisation. Creativity and nomadism is valued, and in order to moonshot this, we need orthogonal thinking: the anonymous, decentralised and open source nature of this allows for such to take place too.

Funds within the organisation, in the event we accumulate them, will be openly allocated. For black ops, project funds will be allocated with knowledge to those who require the knowledge.

Road Map[edit]

A more concrete plan, in response to the concerns of a vision that usually is associated with a top down hierarchy. incorporates small project teams or rhizomes, which need delineating in terms of a structural logic. There have been a few experiments; this is the resultant conclusion: there has to be both reflexive pathways, which allow for a decentralised organisation to proceed and an ever more concise method of the best practice.

Multiple Horizons[edit]

From the journal of future studies, there is a notion of adaptive imperative.[6]

Foresight as containing both enabling and constraining features. The problem with a roadmap for a completely decentralised and emergent organisation, which aims to be future proof is the nature of uncertainty and risk itself; in the current 2018 climate of the crypto currency environment, we are trying to create an objectivity of systems, which account for the subjectivity of human thinking and creativity in response to problems themselves. [7]

Role of facilitators[edit]

There will be two types of meetings as borrowed from the holocracy model: tactical and governance meetings. There needs to be a store of knowledge facilitation: auxiliary units, with rhizomal seeding, whereby a temporary team is put in place to internally work out methods of best practice; this allows us to experiment and come up with methods of practice in a way that constantly evolves; change and future proofing are built in into the system dynamic of the rhizome. The role of auxiliary facilitators is to be present in ensuring a harmony among the disharmony; the aux unit will work between tactical meetings and governance meetings, tactical being in reference to the project rhizomes which spin off—in the future, this role may expand as rhizomes scale into their own offshoots. All off shoots would still work horizontally. Thus, it is important to iron out kinks in the aux unit role. They will act as horizontal appendages, resolving conflicts between moving parts.
